I seem to be having a fair few holidays this year. Within a few weeks of getting back from my big trip cycling around the Netherlands I’ve spent a, much quieter week on Norfolk Island, with my partner and my aunt, who has been visiting there since 1963. (About 15 trips she thinks.)
Norfolk Island was much more interesting than I expected with a long history apparently starting in 1774 with its (European) discovery by Captain Cook. There were two waves of convict settlement starting in 1788 followed by the granting of land to Bounty descendants from Pitcairn in 1856. It’s a small (about 8km by 5km) but beautiful island with great views, beautiful bays and coves and the, ever present, norfolk pines. As always it was the historic buildings which inspired me to paint as you can see from the three small paintings.
