Het Loo and Hoenderloo

Packed and away about 8.30 again this morning. It seems to take about an hour 20  to get up and packed up for the day. Caught a ferry across the Ijssel river first up and headed to Apeldoorn where I visited the Paleis Het Loo (photo above), formerly the summer residence of the dutch royal family. It dates back to William and Mary of Orange of British royalty fame. It was an imposing palace with enormous hunting forest and beautiful formal gardens attached. I paid for an audio guide and really enjoyed the sequence if events described including brief residence of Napoleon and occupation by the SS during WW2.
I moved on again getting totally lost in Apeldoorn, the maps I’m using give you a set of routes between numbered junction points, so you just follow numbered signs to each junction, however if you lose your way it’s very difficult to recover. Anyway I added about 10km to my day which totalled 55km.
I’m at Hoenderloo in a nice camp and planning to visit the Hoge Veluwe national park and Kroller Muller museum with its great collection of Van Goghs works tomorrow.

  1. Great to catch up with your travels Quilliam, I will give our friends an update tomorrow morning! Hope the weather is kinder for you

  2. Hi Quilliam,
Trust you are now enjoying good company, a warm dry bed and a well deserved rest. You will have many tales to tell us “stay at homes” when you return.

  3. Dear Quilliam,
I was visiting my nephew and his family in Appeldoorn while I was over there and we had a lovely day visiting the palace too.I wish I had been able to give you their address and you could have stayed with them. They are lovely people.
Did you get to see Delft? Such a pretty town.
