Last day on Kefalonia

Over the last couple of days Paulette and I have had a hire car. In this case a particularly nasty Chevrolet (Daihatsu) Matiz with at least one square wheel. We’ve visited several of the major beauty spots on the island, drank some more coffee, made some more sketches and generally had a good, relaxing time.
Favourite spots include:
Fiskardo, a very pretty small fishing village on the north of the island with old Venetian style houses on the water front.
Assos, another waterfront village situated in the neck of an isthmus with a fortress high above it on the peninsula.
Myrtos beach, where we had a swim, is a lovely white half circle beach nesting below high cliffs with a steep winding access road.
Yesterday, our second day with the car, we drove across the island to Sami. The road climbed high over two mountain passes in the 24 km trip. Sami was a mini clone if Argostoli where we are based, but nearby is one of the islands tourist attractions, the Mellisani cave/lake. We followed signs to a rather nondescript car park and after paying descended some steps into a tunnel which led down to an ancient limestone cave where theĀ  centre of the roof had partly fallen in a very long time ago. The cave was full of the clearest blue water up to 60m deep. A boat man took us around the lake and into another cavern partly lit by electricity.
On the way home we visited a Venetian castle on the top of a hill behind our town.
The pen and wash painting is of Agostoli from our terrace.
Off to Athens tomorrow morning. I’ll try to get another post in from there.
